I received so many compliments on my bedroom, I figured I would do a simple blog post explaining how and where I purchased my bed, pillows, and majority of my bedroom linens. I will post links below! 

First and foremost, I literally researched the "perfect" non-toxic, eco-friendly, organic, cruelty-free, vegan mattresses for months! A lot of work, right?! Previously to this purchase, we slept on a tempurpedic mattress for years, and jersey cotton or satin sheets. Although it was like sleeping on a pillowy cloud, I didn't know how toxic mattresses and pillows - memory foam in particular - really were until recent years. Memory foam or not, you should do some research before making your next mattress, pillow, and/or sheet purchases. We spend an average of 8 hours a day in our bed and on our pillows / sheets; this means breathing in any toxicity they come with!  I am healing from many ailments, but being that I am healing allergies and asthma, my bedroom materials play an extremely important role in my health. Allergies or not, we should be more conscientious of what we sleep in and on for the sake of our overall health.  

 

MATTRESS 

Did you know that the average mattress contain [potential] cancer-causing, hormone disruptive, and neurotoxic materials such as formaldehyde, chloroform, heavy metals, and harsh flame retardants (just to name a few)? Foams especially are extremely toxic due to the off-gassing affect. 

 

** OFF-GASSING - "It happens when “volatile organic compounds” (VOCs) break down. As opposed to being stable, these “volatile” (or unstable) compounds break apart, most commonly forming gasses — hence the term off-gassing. In mattresses, the most common place to find VOCs is in the foam and adhesives." - AmeriSleep.com 

 

I eventually drove myself nuts in my search, as there is no such thing as "perfect" in life. Being that I was still looking to purchase a memory foam mattress, I found the option which best suited my requirements and our comfort needs = the memory foam, "relaxed firm," mattress by Loom & Leaf (sister company of Saatva, regular coil spring mattress). They are Certi-PUR certified, which is important to look for when purchasing a non-toxic mattress. Certi-PUR have a list of mattresses on their website that are certified, too. Certi-PUR certified means that the mattress is made without the use of or materials like heavy metals, formaldehyde,  phthalates, and toxic flame retardants, and also has low VOC emissions. This hypoallergenic mattress is composed of bio-based foams, Visco elastic memory foam, cooling gel, and finished in 100% organic cotton cover.  Also, cruelty free & zero animal products! Woo-hoo! 

 

Materials of Loom & Leaf include: "Rayon and Kevlar thread, Organic cotton, Plant-based natural thistle which consists of wood pulp and a polyester bonding agent, Bio-based Visco memory foam, Plant-based foams of 30% soy and corn oil coupled with polyurethane and dacron." Best you're going to get with a memory foam!

Our bio-based foams are shipped from our foam plant in Iowa to our factories only after they are fully stabilized. There is no off-gassing in any of our 19 factories, and no off-gassing in your home."

PILLOWS

Pillows pose the same health risks because most of them contain toxic foams, and off-gassing as well. Not to mention, many pillows are made from animal materials such as bird feathers. When purchasing a pillow, look for GOTS certification. This means the materials are organic. When purchasing a pillow, also look for materials such as

  • shredded latex

  • kapok - a natural tree fiber 

  • organic cotton

  • buckwheat

  • wool (although, I personally avoid wool for vegan purposes)

"GOTS is recognized as the world's leading processing standard for textiles made from organic fibers. It defines high-level environmental criteria along the entire organic textiles supply chain and requires compliance with social criteria as well. Only textile products that contain a minimum of 70% organic fibers can become GOTS certified." - Global Organic Textile Standard  (GOTS) 

 

I recently purchased 2 standard pillows by Avocado Mattress. These organic pillows are made with natural eco-INSTITUT certified latex rubber foam ribbons and natural kapok fiber, majority of material being kapok. The pillow cover is a high-thread count cover made with GOTS-certified organic cotton. This is NOT memory foam, but feels just as plush and soft, but firm enough to give support. 

 

I honestly would have just bought an Avocado or Saatva mattress, had I not been so overzealous on buying another memory foam. BUT, I am happy with our purchase and it's the "best" we are going to get for non-toxic foam. Plus our mattress, pillows, and linens are all organic, and vegan ;) 

 

LINENS 

My quilt is from anthropologie and is literally over a decade old. Probably ain't the healthiest but it's cotton, and a keeper for now! Our other blanket, under the quilt, is also older, but is made from organic cotton and bamboo. I purchased a queen/ organic, waterproof, hypoallergenic mattress cover on amazon - click here for link. In case you're interested, the other memory foam mattress brands I was interested in are T&N, BEAR, NEST. I still found Loom & Leaf to be best fit. ZEN makes a great latex mattress but is also made of wool. Avocado and Saatva have standard coil-spring mattresses, and I know avocado mattresses use wool as well.

Again, you can be like me and drive yourself nuts over the perfect mattress, but at the end of the day, you just have to find something that is the least toxic and best suits you / your family's needs. TIPS 

Aside from what I already stated previously, here's some things you can ask the company you're researching/purchasing from: 

  • list of detailed materials in the mattress?

  • are the materials organic ?

  • is there use of formaldehyde and heavy metals?

  • is this a cruelty free and/or vegan company? 

  • are they certified in anything, especially Certi-PUR?

  • is there flame retardants used - if so, what? 

  • is there off-gassing?

  • if coil spring - what metals are used? 

Some other tips for keeping your bedroom clean is to wash your sheets often with a non-toxic laundry detergent. I list non-toxic products under GREEN PRODUCTS in the RESOURCES tab on my website.  Also, I love using my Young Living oils and diffuser. Crystals are great to keep by your bed, in your room, and even under your pillow. Some of my bedroom favorites are howlite, [small] citrine, amethyst, black obsidian, and lithium. 

 

Last but not least, I LOVE having salt lamps and plants in the bedroom. Who am I kidding - I have them in every room  in my house, ha! But seriously, guys, salt lamps and plants are so cleansing. Salt lamps put negative ions into the air, and are very purifying. Negative ions would sound like a bad thing, but this is actually an extremely positive, cleansing, and good thing! The negative ions attract positively charged, harmful particles and chemicals, and neutralize them. Balance! It's believed that salt lamps improve sleep and mood, skin conditions, help circulation and respiration, and even help things such as depression, colds, asthma, etc... Some great bedroom plants include pathos, peace lilies, aloe, snake plants, philodendron, lavender, and spider plants. All low maintenance and oxygenating. 

Oils, crystals, plants, salt lamps. Got it?!
